Ascham Moves to 100% Renewables

In 2025, Ascham continues to self-generate electricity from our solar power installations, with more planned for the new rooftop of the redeveloped Fiona campus, under construction this year. However, the School still needs to purchase electricity, as our demand exceeds what we can produce through our solar assets, especially after daytime hours or on low-sunlight days.

In 2018, Ascham was the first school in NSW and one of the first schools in Australia to sign onto a Corporate Renewables Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with wholesale retailer Flow Power.

At that time, we signed a 10-year deal for offtake from new NSW wind and solar renewable projects to power at least 90% of our electricity needs. Since the agreement went into effect on 1 January 2019, the School’s electricity has been sourced from farms including Sapphire Wind Farm near Glen Innes and the Bomen Solar Farm in the Wagga Wagga region.

By way of a Large-scale Generation Certificate (LGC), we are delighted to have updated our Power Purchase Agreement to now ensure that Ascham sources 100% renewable electricity for our School’s needs, effective 1 January 2025. This also results in reducing Ascham’s electricity-related Scope 2 and 3 emissions to zero, and extends our PPA for another two years until 31 December 2030.

Continuing to support suppliers in regional NSW, including the Sapphire Wind Farm and Bomen Solar Farm, further deepens our connection to country NSW, from where we have drawn Ascham’s Boarding cohort for over 135 years.

With 100% renewables now powering our School, we are realising Ascham’s strategic commitment of Sustaining our Future.
