It is no secret that Ascham alumni are renowned for their organisational skills. Indeed many university tutors and lecturers have commented that they know a former Ascham student immediately because of their thorough organisation! This distinction is often credited to the Ascham Diary, an integral part of student life.
The Diary is formally introduced in Year 2 and skills are sequentially built upon to support students in their academic and personal development. Good diary habits enhance our ability to organise, reflect and grow. Here at Ascham, we believe the earlier these skills are introduced the better. Here is why:
Organisation and Responsibility: Using the Diary teaches students how to organise their tasks and manage their time. It helps them learn to plan their day, keep track of homework and remember important dates like birthdays or School events. It is an essential tool for developing good organisational habits, which are crucial for balancing academic work with extracurricular activities.
Goal Setting and Reflection: Students are encouraged to use the Diary to set personal and academic goals. Regular reflection within the Diary helps them assess their progress, adjust their strategies and stay focused on their objectives. This practice fosters a sense of responsibility and motivation.
Communication: The Diary acts as a communication tool between students, teachers and families. Teachers may write notes to students or families in the Diary, and families can use it to communicate with teachers. This practice ensures that lines of communication are always open, and everyone is on the same page.
Developing Good Study Habits: Using the Diary encourages students to develop effective study habits. By planning their study time and keeping track of homework, students learn to prioritise tasks and allocate sufficient time to each subject, which is key to academic success.
Personal Development: Beyond the classroom, the Diary is a space for students to reflect on their personal growth, experiences and emotions. This helps them develop self-awareness, resilience and emotional intelligence, each of which are essential life skills.
Building upon good diary habits from Year 2 forms the groundwork for lifelong skills in time management, goal setting, reflection and the ability to communicate effectively. The Ascham Diary is far more than a planner; it is a comprehensive tool that supports our students in becoming organised, reflective and proactive learners, preparing them for both their academic journey and personal growth.
