STEAM is integral at Ascham. Our students thrive when researching, designing, building and creating projects across the spectrum of STEAM disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics.
Year 6 have been working on an integrated PDHPE and STEAM project this term. This project celebrates the culmination of their learning in PDH throughout Junior School. The students were given the task of designing and making an interactive product that will help young people to make healthy choices. Two Micro:bits were provided to each group to code in Science and PDH lessons.
The final event of the unit was a showcase of the Year 6 ‘Smart Choices’ projects. Many fantastic ideas were brought to life and shared with Fiona staff and students. Some of these included a pillow that tracks your sleep, a water bottle that reminds you to rehydrate, a mirror that gives positive affirmations, a water safety question and answer box and a watch that reminds you to reapply sun protection. Well done to all girls for their fantastic efforts.
The whole of Fiona (Years 3 to 6) concluded Term 3 with an exciting STEAM Activity Day, fully embodying the Ascham values as they participated with heart and soul in four diverse activities, each representing different aspects of STEAM. The day started with some students grounding themselves through a calming yoga session. Other highlights included the ever-popular escape rooms, scavenger hunt and Blooket quiz. Chemistry enthusiasts delved into the properties of slime, while budding engineers had fun with bridge building, LEGO creations, and a paper plane challenge.
The day was rich in technology and creativity, with students exploring the arts through filmmaking, music recording, a Sphero dance party, and learning to play the Indonesian instrument, the angklung. Others experimented with circuits and electricity or tackled challenging maths problems.
Each session was thoroughly enjoyed, thanks to the dedication of everyone involved. Special thanks go to the STEAM Activity Day Planning Committee of students, and to the Years 5 and 6 students who helped lead the sessions.
