Explore and Grow With Co-curricular

As our students prepare for the opening of the 2025 Senior School musical, Mamma Mia!, our Head of Co-Curricular Mrs Carolyn Heinz reflects on the opportunities provided by Ascham’s extensive Co-curricular program, and the myriad of benefits they bring…

‘Co-curricular activities are vital in shaping well-rounded individuals, providing students with opportunities to engage, explore and grow beyond the academic environment. From Sport and Music programs to Speech and Drama, Debating, STEAM clubs and volunteer organisations—all these offer a myriad of positive impacts on student wellbeing, academic buoyancy and interpersonal connection.

The mental and emotional health of young people significantly improve when participating in co-curricular activities. Many studies have found a correlation between students’ involvement in co-curricular activities and higher levels of emotional resilience compared to students who do not participate. Activities promote physical fitness through sports, reduce stress via creative outlets like art or music, and provide social engagement, helping students combat feelings of isolation. Team sports encourage collaboration and camaraderie, fostering a sense of belonging and boosting self-esteem. Artistic pursuits like drama and art allow students to express emotions constructively, enhancing emotional resilience.

Academic buoyancy is a student’s ability to bounce back from challenges and setbacks in their educational journey. Engaging in co-curricular activities that require discipline, focus and time management helps students develop these qualities, which they can then apply to their studies. Encountering and overcoming challenges in non-academic settings—such as mastering a musical piece or excelling in a sports competition—instils perseverance and a growth mindset. This resilience translates into greater confidence in tackling academic obstacles.

Co-curricular activities act as bridges for social interaction, helping students form meaningful connections with peers, mentors and their broader community. Working together towards a shared goal, whether in sports, clubs or performing arts, builds teamwork and communication skills. These shared experiences forge bonds that often extend beyond the activity itself.

Co-curricular involvement introduces students to individuals from other Year groups, fostering empathy and mutual understanding—crucial elements for personal and social development. This is highly evident this year among the cast and crew of Mamma Mia!.

Being able to work with other students from different Year groups and students from other schools has seen us build a close family environment, and I have made lifelong friends. I’ve learnt how important it is to balance my academic studies with my creative pursuits. Being involved in Mamma Mia! is something I will always remember.

By participating in co-curricular activities, students not only enrich their educational experience but also equip themselves with essential skills and values that will serve them throughout their lives.’
