Our Prep to Year 2 (Hillingdon) Coordinator Mrs Catherine Clayton employed our gorgeous resident bear—Hillingdon Ted—to keep our youngest students entertained and engaged during months of remote learning.
Hillingdon Ted was prepared for her Big Remote Adventure at the start of Term 3, but, like her fellow citizens of NSW, did not quite ‘plan’ on her remote adventure being extended. As Mamma Ted reassured her: ‘Always be prepared that your Plan A can often be thrown out of the window…so you must have a Plan B, C, D and possibly, a Plan E too. It’s called pivoting!’
Each week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Hillingdon Ted continued to bring her Ted Talks (no ads!) to our Hillingdon community via our students’ Seesaw inbox. These talks always began with a carefully selected piece of music, followed by the teaching of a new breathing and mindfulness technique for Ascham’s youngest students, and some words of wisdom or reflection from Ted.
Ted has spoken on a variety of topics including: Australian Wimbledon wins, coping with worry and uncertainty, the importance of having fun and laughing, being prepared for remote learning each day, how to demonstrate the Ascham values when learning remotely, celebrating our Australian Olympians, being a good friend, using cotton (kind) words and actions and not sandpaper (unkind/rough) words and actions, and seeking out the beauty each and every day. Hillingdon Ted even discusses and participates in charity events including Jeans for Genes Day where she donned a pair of denim overalls.
Ted continued to be inspired by Hillingdon students who entered into her world of imagination and dramatic play, introducing their own ‘Ted’ to accompany them on their remote learning journey, be it another teddy or other soft toy. Hillingdon Ted received photos and videos in response to her Ted Talks, reminding her of what an honour it is to speak to our youngest hearts, minds and souls.
‘No one can ever lock down your imagination,’ she said.
With the daylight-saving dawn of a new term and Prep now back on site, Hillingdon Ted continues to share her Ted Talks (no ads!) with the Ascham community every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This term, Hillingdon Ted is focusing her talks on helping students prepare for the resumption of face-to-face learning.
‘It is just like waiting for Christmas morning, Mama and Papa! I cannot wait until Kindergarten, Year 1 AND Year 2 are all back onsite!’ declares Ted.
Hillingdon Ted really has been a breath of fresh air right throughout lockdown for our youngest Ascham girls. We love you Hillingdon Ted!
