Wow, What a Book Week!

Not even remote learning will dampen the spirits of our students going all out for Book Week. It was an incredible week of celebrating our love of books and reading – even if we had to share much of it online.

Book Week proved to be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books, connect with one another and have some fun. Despite the physical distance between us, everyone was able to marvel at the various characters everyone dressed as.

In Hillingdon (Prep to Year 2), the girls and their teachers had a wonderful day of dressing up as book characters on Wednesday and sharing their costumes via Flipgrid and Seesaw. Popular characters were Harry and Hermione from Harry Potter, Elsa and various princesses, Roald Dahl characters Matilda and Sophie, a coven of witches and Alice (in Wonderland). There was a crazy scientist, an elegant Jane Austen, an eight-eyed bloodsucking spider, a Shark Lady, a land narwhal, a Tall Cool Bean and a host of dramatic individuals from other books.

The Book Week theme Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds was explored by asking both teachers and girls which world they would like to visit. They also all enjoyed Meerkat Productions’ quirky online theatrical adaptation of one of the shortlisted picture books, Your Birthday Was The Best by Maggie Hutchings and Felicita Sala. The students stepped into the shoes of a friendly cockroach and got some tips on how to be brave (with the help of Bon Jovi).

It was not just the girls who had great fun picking a favourite character and dressing up for the day! The teachers also seized the opportunity to demonstrate their great sense of fun and incredible dance skills in a dance that had specially been put together to entertain the girls. In Fiona (Years 3 to 6), Dorothy, Paddington, Harry Potter, the Paper Bag Princess, several Wallys, Cat in the Hats and two wolves from Little Red Riding Hood were just some of the characters who starred in the dance, grooving to We’re All in this Together which was a fitting song to enjoy during this time.

In the Senior School, throughout the week we ran some fun competitions for the students, including a Book in a Cloud guessing competition, Bookface challenge, Book Spine Poetry and even some Book Character Faceoff polls.

All in all, it was a simply fabulous Book Week!
