The Bathroom Transformation Project

School bathrooms are often the retreat for students who are upset or need some space and time alone. But they are usually also sterile environments, cold, tiled and not especially welcoming. A group of Ascham girls has decided to change all that by transforming a plain old toilet block into a space of colour and inspiration.

Led by Boarding Coordinator Ms Scout Symons and the Boarders’ Committee, the Bathroom Transformation Project was a recent collaboration between boarders and day girls. Inspired by Enlightened Education’s Dannielle Miller, the project quickly came to life. The girls decided to paint portraits of inspiring women and their words on each toilet door, to give girls encouragement, comfort and inspiration.

After drawing and painting for several afternoons and evenings, the girls had created a beautiful space that has contributed to the wellbeing of Ascham students across the Senior School.

Some of the inspiring women and their words include:

‘Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are the most powerful weapons.’ – Malala Yousafzai

‘Feeling beautiful has nothing to do with what you look like.’ – Emma Watson

‘Everyone wants respect.’ – Aretha Franklin

‘At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.’  – Frida Kahlo
