Woollahra Council Youth Photographic and Short Film Prize
Ascham Visual Arts students were extremely well represented at the Woollahra Council Youth Photographic and Short Film Prize this month.
The photographic awards were presented by Mayor of Woollahra Cr Peter Cavanagh and a representative from Australian Centre for Photography, artist Steven Cavanagh. Steven Cavanagh spoke passionately about the importance of photography as a means for young people to have a sense of agency within their world. He was impressed with the sense of vitality in the student work.
In the Senior Category, Year 11 student Isabella Ayres-Munro received a Highly Commended Award for her photographic collage A Thread of Bad Luck (pictured above). Steven Cavanagh was moved by the drama of the composition and the compelling narrative of this photo-collage work. He saw the work as both educational and highly personal. He appreciated that conversations about race, culture, connection and humanity are encouraged in this photograph.
Special Mention Awards in the Junior Category went to Year 9 students Claire Robinson and Jessica Mulligan. In Claire’s photograph Portrait by the Sea, the judge was moved by the use of soft cool light and the intimacy of the portrait. Jessica’s photograph Sunset had the judge captivated by the arresting gaze within the portrait.
Congratulations to all our talented Ascham photographers!
