Book Week 2019
Visiting authors, book character parades, literary trivia quizzes and treasure hunts, workshops, a literary lunch and a Battle of the Books. Book Week was a stimulating, creative and colourful affair at Ascham this year, as we celebrated the week themed ‘Reading is My Superpower’!
Author of the bestselling novels The Book Thief and Bridge of Clay, Markus Zusak was our generous Senior School literary lunch and workshop guest speaker during Book Week. Senior School girls and staff were captivated by his stories of his own personal journey to becoming a writer and also the real-life events that make for great storytelling. Markus had some welcome sage advice about reading and writing, and everyone in attendance relished the opportunity to hear the wisdom shared by such a talented and inspiring writer.
Students in Years 3–6 had the privilege of hearing author Sally Murphy share her insights into writing. After discussing the motivation and inspiration for a variety of her stories, Sally shared the three components of a good novel—the characters, the setting, and the conflict. Sally’s anecdotes about her novels Bushfire, Topling and Roses Are Blue captivated the girls and caused a rush for borrowing her novels from the library at lunchtime. As well as providing a formal presentation, Sally greatly enjoyed chatting to the girls who availed themselves of the opportunity to ‘meet the author’.
This year Hillingdon girls (Prep to Year 2) enjoyed their first Book Week Parade, dressed up as their favourite characters in a truly delightful, colourful event.
These are just a few highlights of the many Book Week activities at Ascham—where, every day, we love books!
