1st in Waverley Youth Art Prize

Ascham girl Kate Smith wins first prize in Junior Division.

Since the end of last term, several Fiona students have been preparing entries for the 2019 Waverley Youth Art Prize. This year’s theme, Pop Your Culture, drew initial inspiration from the Pop Art movement of the 1950s and 60s. At School, students investigated examples of work by artists who embraced the ideas of this movement. Our girls then explored aspects of pop culture from their own time, including everyday life, food, celebrities, heroes, comics, music, film, television and other forms of media.

We are excited to announce that Kate Smith of Year 4 has won first prize for the Junior Division for her work I’m Feeling Pretty Hot Today. Of her work the judges commented, ‘The wit of this painting is just too good. It’s quick, funny and straight to the point. The limited colour palette and subject is so pop, but there’s expression in those brush strokes too’. Well done, Kate!

In addition to Kate’s winning painting, a number of entries from Ascham students were selected for hanging in the exhibition. This includes work by: Hannah Lyons, Maya Murphy, Elyssa Gan, Willow Maison and Grace Miocevic.
