The students in our Junior School, Fiona, ongoingly support Gunbalanya School, a remote school in Arnhem Land situated just across the East Alligator River from Kakadu National Park.
Last year our SchoolAid KAT ambassadors, two Fiona students, initiated a fundraising campaign to support literacy among Indigenous communities. They spent significant time researching different schools before choosing Gunbalanya. Collaborating with Dymocks Children’s Charities who agreed to match their fundraising efforts dollar for dollar, the girls successfully rallied the support of Fiona students and the wider Ascham community to raise a total of $4,000.
Appreciating the direct impact that this initiative is having on the literacy of Gunbalanya’s students, our 2019 KAT Ambassadors, Zara Dempsey and Mia Murray, decided to continue the campaign. To start their 2019 efforts, on Harmony Day in Term 1, Zara and Mia invited Year 3 and all students new to Fiona to contribute to the Wall of Hands that they had created last year. The result is a beautifully colourful wall in Fiona Hall, displaying a patterned hand artwork from each student in Fiona.
This week we received beautiful photos, drawings and handwritten messages of thanks from the students and staff of Gunbalanya. Zara and Mia are looking forward to providing updates regarding the campaign as they have now engaged the support of Hillingdon (Prep to Year 2) and our Senior School with some exciting initiatives planned for Reconciliation Week (27 May – 2 June) and beyond.
