A memoir of life under Mao

On 21 March we were delighted to launch the published memoirs of our own Chinese language teacher Dr Vivian Bi.

Bright Swallow: making choices in Mao’s China is a moving story of endurance, hope and resilience, documenting Vivian’s survival as an orphan at 15 living under the bleakness of Mao’s rule and through the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

The launch was a delightful ‘in conversation’ format led by Vivian’s fellow Languages Department teacher and close colleague Mrs Jane Sydenham-Kwiet, who is an Ascham Old Girl and who has taught at our school for over 40 years. The conversation intrigued our audience, comprising members of the Ascham community, with Vivian signing copies afterwards.

Bright Swallow is available in bookshops and also online:

‘A searing authentic account of one remarkable young woman’s travails in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. I couldn’t put it down. This is memoir writing at its finest.’—Robert Macklin
