Ascham Rowing secures finals place despite tough conditions
On 18 February, Ascham girls competed at the NSW Rowing Championships. Our Head Coach of Rowing, Mr Thomas Parker, reports on a tough day out on the water.
‘Liana Isaias-White, Olivia McDonald, Tara Arkins, Maddie Smith and Phoebe Barnes went into the regatta knowing that the competition would be fierce. Our plan was to race only for the sake of gaining experience prior to the Head of the River Regatta on 3 March.
With temperatures exceeding 35 degrees, Penrith Lakes became an oven and at times the regatta was on the verge of being cancelled. Phoebe Barnes raced through the heats of the Under 17 singles, her first ever 2000-metre race. Phoebe rowed a tough race and remained tenacious until the finish line.
Olivia and Liana stuck to their race plan without panic in the Schoolgirl Doubles event, despite trailing some of the best competitors from around Australia.
Maddie and Tara rowed through a field of schools renowned for producing top crews, earning a place in the final. Their performance was beyond our expectations.
I was very proud of everyone’s effort in such difficult conditions. All of the girls, and their parents, went home exhausted. I have to assure them that this is probably about as a tough a regatta as they are ever likely to encounter. I would like to thank everyone for their help during the regatta, and especially for their positive attitude which made it worthwhile. Keep on persisting Ascham Rowing!’
