Head Girl receives Dame Marie Bashir Peace Award

On Monday 25 September, Ascham’s 2017 Head Girl Gabi Stricker-Phelps was presented with the 2017 National Council of Women of NSW Dame Marie Bashir Peace Award at Parliament House, Sydney. On behalf of the School, Year 12 Coordinator Ms Heidi Beesley also accepted a certificate for Ascham.

The award is open to female senior high school students nominated by their principal for demonstrating leadership in social justice and harmony. This year there were 85 nominees, with just eight students receiving an award.

Gabi has been the driving force behind numerous initiatives, including establishing the Ascham School Committee’s I See You project this year, which created a framework to acknowledge all Ascham students for their individual qualities and achievements, building a community where the values of inclusiveness and sisterhood have been strengthened.

Gabi also spoke to NSW government ministers about the need for adoption policy reforms that target red tape, and she is a vocal supporter for marriage equality, describing it as ‘a human rights issue’.

Congratulations Gabi for being a highly worthy recipient of the Dame Marie Bashir Peace Award.
