Ascham’s Senior School musical, Follies, played four stunning performances in May.
A co-production with two local boys’ schools, Cranbrook School and Sydney Grammar School, the young cast tackled Follies, a daunting and multi-layered Stephen Sondheim musical, with an amazing level of maturity and depth of insight.
Follies is rarely performed in Australia, so it was a great to present this complex and compelling production full of Broadway standards. Audience members were suitably impressed by this current production directed by Ascham’s Head of Drama Ms Kelly Young.
Follies was supported by a 25-piece orchestra, comprising both students and teachers. The score sounded lush and exciting under the baton of musical director, Mrs Catherine Wilson. Soloists stood and delivered some of Sondheim’s best songs with style and panache. Beautiful Girls, Ah, Paris!, Broadway Baby and the amazing I’m Still Here each stopped the show.
Miss Emily Dreyer’s choreography was reminiscent of the era and the set and costumes by Ms Megan Venhoek glittered and gleamed. Mr Tim Hope’s lighting was very moody and evocative of the present and past in this show.
The stage crew were outstanding under the guiding eye of Ascham’s technical director, Mr Michael Linney.
There is so much praise to be given to everyone who worked on this show, but needless to say, the backstage volunteers, the crew, the cast and the audiences will forever be glad they entered the world of Follies.
