International Women’s Day Speaker
On 7 March we were fortunate to have Ms Juliet Bourke visit Ascham to present to our Senior assembly for International Women’s Day.
Juliet is a senior partner at Deloitte, leading Australia’s Diversity and Inclusion Consulting practice. A keen advocate for women in the workplace and in leadership, she is a member of numerous boards and award panels such as Harvard’s Women’s Leadership Board. Juliet is an author and keynote speaker at hundreds of global conferences, including TEDx, and we were honoured to host her at Ascham so our students could experience their own ‘TEDx talk’.
Juliet delivered a very inspiring speech, asking the girls to consider not just the ‘why’ but also the ‘how’ of what they dreamed of doing in the future. Within this, she urged students to find what she called their ‘noble purpose’—something which aligns their head, their heart and their soul. She also emphasised the importance of ‘the how’ students go about achieving this purpose: whether they act with others, with kindness and respect, or with thoughtlessness and selfishness. Her final message was a reminder of the immense opportunities and privileges that our girls have, and their ability to give back to others.
It was a powerful message that was much appreciated by all students, and we were extremely grateful to Juliet for being so generous with her time. It was a fantastic kick-off to the celebration of International Women’s Day by the Senior students’ Social Justice and Charity Committee.
