Years 5 and 6 get scientific with STEAM projects

This year, as part of their Science and Technology unit on Space Exploration, Year 5 has been working on various robotics projects.

Using the Lego EV3 Mindstorms robotics kits, the girls have been investigating how robots assist humans in space, through a design task that included planning and designing their own space robot. The girls applied mathematics, learnt about engineering, and needed to use their collaborative working skills in order to meet the challenges. In June Year 5 travelled to Loreto Normanhurst for an exciting and interactive robotics workshop, where they learnt how to program a robot and the basic rules of Robocup, a robotics competition designed to develop primary and secondary students’ passion for robotics. Two Year 5 girls reported: ‘We love Robocup because it is all about sharing ideas, problem solving and having fun.’ As part of their unit on Electricity, Year 6 has been designing a game that educates others about the safe use or conservation of energy sources, using MaKey MaKey kits. MaKey MaKey is an invention that tricks a computer into thinking that almost anything is a keyboard. This allows the user to hook up all kinds of fun things as an input. It’s an invention kit for the 21st century that can turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet.
