Ascham has long valued the benefits girls gain from participating in a wide variety of sports. There are many valuable lessons learnt playing sport: commitment, team building, personal achievement, development of a life long skill and interest, confidence, enjoyment and an appreciation of the benefits of physical exercise. The school provides a place on a team for every girl who wants to play. Almost every girl competes in interschool competitions, but it is not compulsory.
With a wonderful team of sports teachers and coaches, Ascham offers a wide choice of sports: athletics, basketball, cross-country running, diving, equestrian, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rowing, sailing, skiing, softball, swimming, tennis, touch football and water polo.
Each term Ascham Senior School participates in selected sports in the Independent Girls’ Schools Sports Associations (IGSSA) competitions and carnivals.
Inter-house competitions
Girls are assigned to a school house in both Fiona and the Senior School. These are the groups within which the school organises its own competitions. These include the swimming and athletics carnivals and the annual music festival. School houses provide opportunities for the various year groups to integrate, cooperate and compete within the school in a spirit of friendly rivalry. The houses assist in building a strong sense of school community and in fostering enduring friendships.
