Fostering a passion for learning, each Fiona girl is empowered to drive and manage her learning journey. Individual guidance and rigorous expectations encourage each girl to achieve her personal best. Our ongoing emphasis is to develop in each girl the ability to think critically about her learning, to question her thinking and to set, reflect upon and reach for new learning targets each term.
Girls progressively take charge of their learning, carefully scaffolded by an increasing range of independent learning activities. As girls move through their Fiona years they develop the skills necessary for a Dalton education, culminating in their first Dalton assignments in Year 6.
Girls are encouraged to be reflective, empowered to voice their opinions and to take risks in their learning in a positive learning environment based on respect for each other.
Following the NSW Board of Studies curriculum, Fiona girls study English, Mathematics, Science, Human Society and its Environment, Music, PDHPE and Art.
In English and mathematics, girls work at their level and pace in differentiated groups. Essential questions form the basis of the girls scientific and HSIE studies with critical enquiry linked to their work in Information technologies.
Throughout the curricula, the girls are encouraged to become global citizens. They are immersed in a broad range of cultural studies. Each year girls analyse a different culture culminating in units of comparative religion and human rights in Year 6. This underpins their commitment to charitable works locally and internationally.
In Years 3 and 4 girls learn French and Mandarin with the option to change their Mandarin studies to German in Years 5 and 6. The emphasis in these lessons is to develop a cultural understanding of the language whilst mastering the basics in speaking, listening and writing skills. Study trips to Noumea and China are available to support these studies for girls in Years 5 and 6.
Specialist staff teaches music, art, French, German, Mandarin and physical education, personal development and health.
