Welcome to Boarding

Boarding at Ascham brings lifelong friendships within a very special community. We are not an adjunct to the school – rather we are the heart of the school. Boarding is a home away from home, a place where girls become confident learners, independent thinkers and caring individuals.

There are now more than 120 boarders from Year 6 to Year 12. The majority of our girls come from country NSW, with some from Sydney suburbs, interstate and overseas. They live in a number of spacious former homes, providing a family atmosphere, and they enjoy a supervised academic program as well as a comprehensive weekend activity program.

Ascham’s strong academic program provides each girl with the skills to become an independent learner with excellent organisation and time-management. The Dalton Plan allows each girl to develop a rich intellectual life while individual attention from the teachers provides each girl with the support needed to achieve her best. It helps lift and sustain the academic progress of every one of our girls, whatever their abilities and aspirations.

Sport plays an important role in the life of an Ascham boarder. Our girls regularly compete at the highest level in school but it is not just for high-flyers – participation at all levels is our goal. The girls enjoy Saturday sport and are regularly ferried to their venues by our day families, helping build bonds between day girls and boarders.

Ascham boarding provides 24-hour health care and excellent meals by Ascham’s own chef. The Head of Houses and Boarding Coordinators play a key role in ensuring our boarders are happy, healthy and safe.

Since 1887 boarding has played a significant role in the development of Ascham. Our first intake of boarders occurred just 12 months after the inauguration of the School. In 2012, we are proud to celebrate 125 years of boarding history and fine Ascham traditions. For Ascham boarders, boarding creates a new awareness about differences between people. They learn to live harmoniously with one another in a respectful and caring community. When our girls graduate they are enriched with the memories of their experiences, and the strong friendships they develop remain dear to them throughout their lives.
